Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding
The Government of India instituted the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding in 1965 as a tribute to the memory of independent India’s first Prime Minister, and his lifelong dedication to the cause of world peace and international understanding. The Award is given to persons for their outstanding contribution to the promotion of international understanding, goodwill and friendship among peoples of the world. The Council acts as the Secretariat for this award which carries a Trophy, Citation and cash prize of Rs. 2.5 million. The Award is presented by Hon’ble President of India at a special function at Rashtrapati Bhavan in the presence of Vice-President of India and Prime Minister of India.
The Jury for the Jawaharlal Award for International Understanding chaired by Hon 'bIe Vice-President of India Shri Bhairon Singh Shekhawat has decided to confer the Award for the year 2005 on Prof. Wangari M. Maathai of Kenya. Prof. Wangari M. Maathai, who became the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004, is internationally recognized for her persistent struggle for democracy, human rights and environmental conservation. The award was presented to her at a special function at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on 22nd March 2007.
The Jury has also decided to confer the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding for the year 2006 on President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, H.E. Mr. Luiz Nacio Lula da Silva. Besides being a leading world leader, President Lula has contributed immensely towards the strengthening of bilateral relations between India and Brazil.
